Recovery of oil is a very important procedure, Methods of oil recovery varies depending on the various parameters.The most important parameter that determines the recovery procedure is API (American Petroleum Institute gravity) .

API = (141.5 / SG) - 131.5
SG - specific gravity of the crude oil.

Based on API oil/crude is classified into three types
1. Light oil – 30 API
2. Medium light oil - API between 20 - 30
3. Heavy oil - API between 10-20

Recovery Procedures could be classified into three
1. Primary recovery procedure
    a. Natural lift
        Natural lift happens when the natural energy with in well automatically pushes the oil out. Its is done through the following methods.
        i. Water drive
        ii. Gas drive
        iii. Gravity drain
        iv. Combination drive
  b. Artificial lift
      When the oil is not able to surface using natural energy artificial lifts are employed . It happens when the API of the crude is between      10-20 (Heavy oil) artificial lift has to be employed couples with other methods . Artificial lift is done using the following methods.
        i. Gas lift
        ii. Progressive cavity Pump (PCP)
        iii. Electric submersible pump
        iv. Beam Pump

2. Secondary recovery procedure
    a. Water Injection
    b. Gas Injection

3. Tertiary recovery procedure
     a. Thermal
          i. In-Situ Combustion
          ii. Steam injection
     b. Chemical flooding
          i. Polymer injection
          ii. Alkaline flooding
          iii. Surfactant Flooding
     c. Miscible gas injection
         i. Natural gas injection
         ii. CO2 flooding
